54th Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow: When popular culture and kitsch merge

Constanze TressMay 15, 2009

Popular culture and kitsch merge this weekend as the Russian capital sees the final of the 54th Eurovision Song Contest. When pop star Dima Bilan won in Belgrade last year, Russia earned the right to host the annual competition. It's one of Europe's most watched shows with a TV audience of at least 100 million. As in other years, politics are never far away. Gay rights campaigners have vowed to ignore a potential ban and march through Moscow on Saturday just before the final. But so far - even near the Kremlin - it's been party time.
