German media sources are reporting that the German government is planning to broaden its military operations in Afghanistan. Spiegel magazine and the news agency dpa say the German defence ministry has plans to send a thousand additional troops to the country and significantly expand its area of deployment. Afghanistan is top of the agenda at this year's Munich Conference on Security Policy that got underway this morning in the Bavarian capital.
