Arts.21: History as Comic – The Trend toward Graphic Novels - 18.10.2008

Graphic novels are comic books with a lengthy storyline usually aimed at an adult audience. They are growing in popularity world-wide. In France and Belgium, comics are already big business, and now Germany is jumping on the bandwagon. ARTS.21 speaks to Isabel Kreiz, the most successful graphic novelist in Germany. Her historical novel, «Die Sache mit Sorge» ("The Case of Sorge") tells the true story of a German spy during the Second World War. And we also meet Marcus Herrenberger, who traced the 20th century in his graphic novel «A Rat's History». As these talented artists prove, novels can be drawn as well as written.
