Boris Nemtsov became involved in politics as a young man in Nizhny Novgorod in the late 1980s. In the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster he organized protests against a nuclear plant being built in his hometown. A few years later, he was appointed governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

In 1997 president Boris Yeltsin appointed him deputy prime minister. Nemtsov was in charge of economic reforms and was deeply opposed to the way state assets were being privatized. During the economic crisis of 1998 he resigned.

Just hours before his assassination, Nemtsov was on a live radio show, and condemned Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea.
