In the Friday night matchday seven opener, Cologne and Ingolstadt met under the lights both looking to hop into the final Champions League spot in the table. In the end, the sides were too even to be separated.

Cologne 1-1 Ingolstadt

(Modeste 10‘ - Matip 21‘)

Coming into the game, Cologne and Bundesliga new-boys Ingolstadt were level in the table on 10 points with the same goal difference. The sides' similar starts to the season proved to show a realistic reflection on both teams, as a draw was the result on Friday night.

Having suffered a derby-hangover defeat to Hertha Berlin during the week, Peter Stöger's Cologne side were dead-set on providing some entertainment for the almost 50,000 strong home support of the Rhein-Energie Stadion. With the world ‘Toleranz' – meaning tolerance, to show support to 1,000 refugees invited to the game on Friday – on their shirts instead of the club sponsors, Cologne made the perfect start.

With just 10 minutes of the clock, Marcel Risse sent in a tempting cross towards Anthony Modeste. The in-form French forward rose highest to head the ball powerfully past the outstretched arm of Ramazan Özcan for his fifth goal of the season. His header was an impressive one and Ingolstadt felt inclined to show its own ability in the air.

11 minutes later and the visitors had an equalizer. An out-swinging corner from Pascal Groß drifted perfectly towards captain Marvin Matip who, on his 30th birthday, angled his header into the top corner with Timo Horn stationary. Both goalkeepers were forced into saves before the interval, but the score remained deadlocked.

Chances were few and far between in the second-half until Cologne striker Yuya Osako had a chance to snatch all three points with just eight minutes remaining. The ball fell to him just three-yards-out from goal, but his effort was diverted over the crossbar by Özcan.

With the points shared, both teams move up two places in the table, to fifth and sixth respectively, while Ingolstadt have set a new Bundesliga record in becoming the first Bundesliga newcomer to reach 10 points from its first four away matches.
