Bundesliga Matchday 1 in Pictures
The Bundesliga is back! Rejoice, football fans. On the first weekend, there have been fantastic goals, red cards and of course, great pictures. Check out the best from Friday and Saturday.
Ingolstadt notch first-ever Bundesliga win
It was an emotional day for the fans, players and staff of FC Ingolstadt in Mainz. The club, which was formed when two local teams merged in 2004, open up its run in the top flight with a 1-0 away win. Lukas Hinterseer's superb second-half strike was the difference. Start as you mean to go on, Ingolstadt!
Darmstadt hold Hannover to draw
33 years after the team's last Bundesliga game, Darmstadt fans packed Merck Stadium and weren't disappointed. Two superb goals from star man Marcel Heller were cancelled out by a Charlinson Benschop strike and an unfortunate own-goal from Darmstadt captain Aytac Sulu. Mevlut Erdinc could have won the game in debut for Hannover, but badly fluffed a penalty.
Leverkusen come from behind at home
It didn't start out as Bayer Leverkusen imagined, but Roger Schmidt's side did end up with three points. Steven Zuber's strike inside five minutes had Hoffenheim in dreamland, but a crucial goal before half-time by Stefan Kiessling levelled the scores. Julian Brandt came off the bench to grab the 2-1 win in the second half with a lovely finish.
Hertha upset Augsburg in 10-on-10 affair
It was a tense opening game between Augsburg and Hertha BSC in Bavaria, as both sides were reduced to ten men during the match. Raul Bobadilla, having earlier signed a new contract, saw red before half time for two yellow cards. Hertha took advantage, with Salomon Kalou converting a penalty. Roy Bereens then joined Bobadilla with two yellows, but the capital club eked out a 1-0 win.
Breitenreiter's Schalke with the perfect start
Schalke brushed aside Werder Bremen 3-0 in new coach Andre Breitenreiter's Bundesliga debut. The first goal was a gift from opponents Bremen, as Theodore Gebre-Selassie chipped his own goalkeeper. Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar added the second-half goals to seal a walk-in-park victory for the Royal Blues.
Bayern beat up Hamburg yet again
Bayern Munich proved that a summer of change had in fact altered little at the Allianz Arena, as the defending champions trounced Hamburg 5-0. Goals from Medhi Benatia, Robert Lewandowski and Douglas Costa, plus a Thomas Müller double, were part of a dominant performance. Meanwhile, Hamburg - as head coach Bruno Labbadia admitted - have a lot to think about.
Dortmund blow Gladbach away
Having conceded after nine seconds of last season, Borussia Dortmund were hoping for something different against Borussia Mönchengladbach - and they got it. Marco Reus opened the scoring, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found his range and Henrikh Mkhitaryan hit paydirt twice to secure a superb 4-0 win. New coach Thomas Tuchel was all smiles, while Gladbach were left grumbling.
Dost does it again against Frankfurt
It's hard to look at Bas Dost and not hum "Some Guys Have All the Luck." Week in, week out, Wolfsburg's hulking Dutch forward seems to be in the right place at the right time to poke home a goal. He was at it again on Sunday, scoring the game winner in the Wolves' 2-1 victory over Frankfurt. Perhaps some people have a talent for being fortunate.
Cologne snatch a win in Stuttgart
It was a fantastic final flurry for the weekend, as four second-half goals saw Cologne beat Stuttgart 3-1 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Anthony Modeste opened the scoring with a penalty and Simon Zoller chipped in a second goal. Daniel Didavi clawed one back from the spot for Stuttgart, but Yuya Osako clinched the win for the Billy Goats.
