Bundesliga Matchday 15: In pictures
Philippe Coutinho stole the show for Bayern Munich, while Borussia Dortmund were inspired to victory by their captain Marco Reus. Elsewhere, Cologne and Hertha Berlin picked up huge results.
Schalke 1-0 Frankfurt
Schalke are back up to fourth after holding on for a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. Benito Raman scored the only goal of the game just after half-time after Amine Harit had broken through the middle. Shortly after, the Royal Blues were reduced to ten men after goalkeeper Alexander Nübel saw red for a dangerous studs-up challenge on Mijat Gacinovic, but Schalke held on.
Wolfsburg 2-1 Gladbach
Borussia Mönchengladbach relinquished top spot in the Bundesliga to RB Leipzig after slipping to a 2-1 defeat in Wolfsburg. Xaver Schlager gave the Wolves an early lead in the Volkswagen Arena but Breel Embolo hit back for the Foals just moments later. The hosts continued to dominate in the second half and were rewarded in injury time when Max Arnold volleyed home from the edge of the box.
Mainz 0-4 Dortmund
Dortmund's attacking skill was on show again as they comfortably dispatched Mainz away from home. Marco Reus set Lucien Favre's side on their way with a powerful first-half shot. Two goals in three minutes in the second half from Jadon Sancho and Thorgan Hazard, the former assisted by Dan-Axel Zagadou (the first of his career) ended the contest. Nico Schulz added the fourth.
Fortuna Düsseldorf 0-3 RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig continued their fine form, dispatching of a torrid Düsseldorf side that opened up just 65 seconds into the game and allowed Patrik Schick to score. Julian Nagelsmann's side could have been 3-0 up inside the opening quarter of an hour, but ended up with that final score anyway thanks to a Timo Werner penalty and a Nordi Mukiele header.
Bayern Munich 6-1 Werder Bremen
Philippe Coutinho proved the matchwinner for Bayern, scoring the first hat trick for Bayern by a Brazilian since Giovane Elber in 2003. Milot Rashica's stunning goal had put Bremen ahead, but despite the best efforts of Jiri Pavlenka, Bayern broke through. Coutinho equalized, then Robert Lewandowski put them ahead. Coutinho added two brilliant goals with Lewandowski and Müller completing the rout.
Cologne 2-0 Bayer Leverkusen
Cologne secured a huge result by beating nine-man Bayer Leverkusen in a local derby. After Aleksandar Dragovic picked up a second yellow, Leverkusen were on the back foot and Cologne's Jhon Cordoba struck with 17 minutes left. After Leon Bailey was dismissed for lashing out, Sebastiaan Bornauw headed in to the delight of the home crowd.
Hertha Berlin 1-0 Freiburg
Vladimir Darida's wonder goal was enough to hand Hertha Berlin a much-needed three points against high-flying Freiburg. Both sides had chances, but it was Hertha who made theirs count. The win is Jürgen Klinsmann's first as a Bundesliga head coach in over 10 years.
Paderborn 1-1 Union Berlin
The two newly-promoted sides couldn't have had more different seasons, but there was no splitting the two on matchday 15. After Marcus Ingvartsen had curled in a beauty to put Union ahead, Kai Proger equalized for the hosts. No winner could be found, as Paderborn picked up only their ninth point of the season. Union remain tenth.
