Bundesliga Matchday 17 in pictures
It was another lively weekend of football in Germany's top division as Bayern Munich held on to first place among a whole gang of hungry challengers. Here are the top pictures from Matchday 17 in the Bundesliga.
Throwing a game away
Billed as a tight encounter between two impressive teams, Eintracht Frankfurt found themselves a man down and then soon after a goal down when goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky (left) rushed out to intercept a ball and caught it outside his box. A straight red card then followed as well as a significant advantage for RB Leipzig.
Big man up front
Towering striker Sandro Wagner added to his already impressive tally of 10 Bundesliga goals with a wonderful solo effort against Augsburg on Saturday. As defenders bounced off him, the 29-year-old continued an impressive run before he finished off the opening goal for Hoffenheim en route to a 2-0 win.
#Saltbae for Calhanoglu
The internet is a weird place, but when it combines with football it's often hilarious. As was the case this weekend, when Hakan Calhanoglu celebrated both of his goals in Bayer Leverkusen's 3-1 over Hertha Berlin by mimicking a Turkish butcher that had become an internet sensation for the manner in which he colorfully chopped his meat.
A grand debut
Paul-Georges Ntep (middle), one Wolfsburg's new signings in January, was impressive in his Bundesliga debut against Hamburg. He was easily the best player on the field and setup the only goal in Wolfsburg's 1-0 win in a perfect pass to Germany poacher Mario Gomez.
Stalemate
A huge variety of excitement and drama was on show in the Bundesliga this weekend, yet unfortunately none of it seemed to come from Darmstadt as they shared a point with Borussia Mönchengladbach in an uneventful 0-0 draw. As two sides struggling in the league this season matched up, it became abundantly clear that both were far more worried about conceding a goal rather than actually scoring one.
Gallant Guido
With a last-minute goal against Ingolstadt on Saturday, Guido Burgstaller not only earned his new Schalke team an important 3-point win but also scored his 15th league goal in Germany this season. Of course, 14 of those goals came at 2. Bundesliga side Nuremberg, but the new striker seems intent on keeping up his scoring pace despite moving up a league.
Surprise striker
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on international duty with Gabon and Adrian Ramos leaving on a transfer to China, Thomas Tuchel was forced to play struggling forward Andre Schürrle (second from the right) up front against Werder Bremen on Saturday. Fortunately for him and his side, Schürrle seemed to thrive in the new role, scoring after just five minutes to ensure all three points in a 2-1 win.
Breathtaking talent
Robert Lewandowski (middle) has scored a lot of goals in his career, but very few were as special as his second against Freiburg on Friday. Taking a cross down on his chest, the Polish international flicked the ball backwards with his right foot and then volleyed it in to the far corner of the goal before it touched the ground. It was a moment of absolute magic from a truly world class player.
A point well earned
Despite providing a challenge to Cologne's defense, Mainz came up empty as they played the Billy Goats to a scoreless draw. Going in to the game, Mainz had lost six of their last 10 Bundesliga games while Cologne had won just two of theirs. Perhaps a point each was a perfect compromise for two struggling sides as they kick off the new year.
