Bundesliga Matchday 2 Pictures
The second matchday of the Bundesliga has begun with a bang. As Hertha and Werder played out a draw on Friday, the rest got involved on Saturday with a red card, 1-1 draws and drama galore.
Hertha and Werder level in Berlin
It was a tight and nervous affair between Hertha and Werder Bremen in the German capital on Friday night. The matchday two opener began with a bang, though, as Valentin Stocker put the hosts ahead inside six minutes. Werder new-boy Anthony Ujah responded to level the scores before half-time, and that's how it remained as the Berliners continued their solid start to the season.
Bayern snatch late win after drama in Sinsheim
Bayern Munich had never lost to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga before today, but Kevin Volland was hell-bent on changing that record, with a record of his own. A nine-second goal equaled Karim Bellarabi's record. Bayern weren't worried and leveled through Thomas Müller, before Jerome Boateng saw red, Hoffenheim missed a spot-kick, and Robert Lewandowski snatched a late win for the champions.
Wolfsburg held to draw in Cologne
The battle of the Billy Goats and The Wolves ended in a draw in Cologne, after a superbly taken Simon Zoller goal was cancelled out in the second half by substitute Nicklas Bendtner. The man of the hour, Kevin De Bruyne, had the chance to snatch a last-gasp win, but couldn't beat Timo Horn or his defense in what is reported to be his last game in green.
Darmstadt earn vital draw at Schalke
While whistles and jeers rang around the Veltins Arena, two very different group-huddles were visible on the middle of the pitch come full-time. Konstantin Rausch's first-half strike meant pressure was on the home side to force the game. Eventually, they scored, through Julian Draxler, and despite their best efforts, a draw at home will disappoint Andre Breitenreiter and his team.
Russ to the rescue for Frankfurt
In what was an entertaining draw at the Commerzbank Arena, the home side left it late to earn themselves a point. Caiuby's first-half effort gave the away side a lead which lasted almost until the end, before captain Marco Russ smashed home inside the box with just minutes to play. No wins for either side in the Bundesliga so far this season.
Hakan does it again for Leverkusen
It was another moment of glory for rising star Hakan Calhanoglu, as he earned Bayer Leverkusen a second win of the season in Hannover. His outstanding free-kick, which left a fully-stretched Ron-Robert Zieler with no chance, was the only goal of the day at the HDI-Arena. He hit the bar once again in the second-half, but the score would end at 1-0.
HSV break Stuttgart hearts at home
In an incredible late game on Saturday night, Hamburg left it late to overcome Stuttgart. A Daniel Ginczek brace had Stuttgart ahead 2-1 at the break, in-between Ivo Illicevic's strike. A red card for the away side left HSV with a chance to win, which they took in the final six minutes. Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Johan Djourou turning the game around at the end.
Perfect start for BVB continues
It can't get much better for Borussia Dortmund right now after a second 4-0 win took BVB to the top of the Bundesliga after matchday two. Goals from Marco Reus, Shinji Kagawa, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed a convincing win against Ingolstadt, in their first ever Bundesliga home match.
Mainz shock Gladbach late on
In what was a slow game that took a while to get going, Mainz came out on top, bouncing back from matchday one's disappointing loss to Ingolstadt, with a win at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Jairo Samperio's opener was cancelled out by Patrick Herrmann, but Christian Clemens nicked the win against the run of play late on.
