Bundesliga Matchday 4 in pictures
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund showed their teeth with easy wins. But awful starts to the season got even worse for Schalke, Bremen and Hamburg.
Robben Returns
Arjen Robben marked his return from injury with the third goal as table toppers Bayern Munich easily overcame supposed rivals Hertha Berlin on an awful pitch at the Allianz. Carlo Ancelotti's side have produced the best ever start to a Bundesliga season after four wins with a goal difference of +13.
Schalke Stunned
Things are going badly wrong in Gelsenkirchen. Schalke took the lead but Japanese striker Yuya Osako quickly equalized for Cologne and the visitors went on to win 3-1. The result sent them up to second spot and left Schalke pointless after four games.
Newcomers Neutralized
RB Leipzig have had a great start to the season and went ahead against Borussia Mönchengladbach through Timo Werner. Gladbach struck late to grab a draw though, but it is already clear that Red Bull-backed Leipzig are a Bundesliga force to be reckoned with.
Lethargic Leverkusen
A 0-0 draw with Augsburg hardly helps Leverkusen's cause after a sticky start to the season. They also missed a penalty for the second straight game and were denied by another piece of magic from Augsburg keeper Marwin Hitz.
Heady Heights
Dortmund thumped Wolfsburg 5-1 away, continuing the goal-glut for Thomas Tuchel's side. The handsome win was rounded off by Lukasz Piszczek's header. Wolfsburg had not conceded in the league before Tuesday, but now they must recover and find a way to get Mario Gomez scoring.
Hamburg Horror
Just 54 seconds after coming on, Nils Petersen grabbed the winner for Freiburg after Hamburg goalkeper Rene Adler had spilled the ball. Hamburg have lost three in a row and have plunged into a fresh crisis, one that puts head coach Bruno Labbadia under pressure ahead of a game against Bayern.
Late Leveller
Denys Oliynyk gave Darmstadt coach Norbert Meier a nice, if late, present for his 58th birthday. The 92nd minute equalizer handed the hosts a 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim. It once again left Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann fuming over a goal conceded late on.
Searing Strike
Bastian Oczipka let fly with a scorcher to hand Eintracht Frankfurt a 2-0 victory at Ingolstadt. The hosts conceded the first from a corner and did not learn their lesson as Oczipka blasted home when the next set piece was cleared to him. After last season's woes, this term promises a different outcome for Nico Kovac and his team.
Premature Posturing
Werder Bremen interim coach Alexander Nouri thought his side were on their way to their first points of the season. But two late Mainz goals handed the away side a 2-1 win and left Bremen rock bottom.
