Canada win ice hockey worlds

Olympic champions Canada have won the ice hockey world championships after thumping Russia 6-1 in the final in Prague. The USA picked up third spot.

Canada has defeated Russia in the final of the ice hockey world championships, managing their first major success at the tournament since 2009.

With a host of NHL players in their ranks, Canada dominated the final taking 37 shots on Russian goalkeeper Sergei Bobrovski while their opponents only managed 12 in return.

Canada started strongly but only got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute as Dallas wing Cody Eakin tipped in a shot by Buffalo forward Tyler Ennis.

Ennis circled the Russian goal two minutes into the second period and took Russian goalie Bobrovski by surprise with a shot between his skate and the post for a 2-0 lead. Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby then made it 3-0 after 28 minutes.

Tyler Seguin scored the Canadians' fourth goal taking his tally to nine overall, making him the top scorer at the tournament.

Crosby set up Claude Giroux for a power-play goal on 49 minutes and then Bobrovski failed to stop a wrist shot by Nathan MacKinnon. Evgeni Malkin scored a consolation goal for Russia four minutes later, but Canada still walked out comfortable winners.

The 2010 and 2014 Olympic champions won all 10 games at the tournament, scoring 66 goals and conceding only 15.

Earlier, the USA won bronze after beating the Czech Republic 3-0. Nick Bonino, Trevor Lewis and Charlie Coyle scored for the USA, while their goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped all 39 Czech shots on goal.
