The draw for the Champions League group stages threw up three match-ups between German and English clubs, while Bayer Leverkusen was paired with holders Barcelona.

German champions Bayern Munich will face Arsenal for the third time in four seasons, but will play the Gunners in the group stages as opposed to the last two knockout stage meetings. Pep Guardiola's men will also need to beat Olympiacos of Greece and Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb to continue their hopes of winning the European Cup.

Last season's German Cup winners Wolfsburg will take on Louis van Gaal's Manchester United in the group phase, with PSV Eindhoven and CSKA Moscow their other opponents. The Wolves lost both times to United in their only other appearance in the Champions League group stages in season 2009-10.

Borussia Mönchengladbach will need to reverse a dismal start to the season, which leaves them bottom of the league after two games, with ties against last season's finalists Juventus, Manchester City and Europa League winners Sevilla to come.

The Foals faced the Spanish side in February, but lost out 5-4 on aggregate to the team that went on to win the Europa League against Dnipro last season.

Bayer Leverkusen, who qualified against Lazio, will make a return to Rome to play AS Roma. But the biggest tie for Roger Schmidt's men is against last year's winners Barcelona who demolished the German side in their visit to the Camp Nou.

Elsewhere, Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Paris Saint-Germain was handed a dream clash against hometown club and Swedish champions Malmo. English champions Chelsea will take on Porto where boss Jose Mourinho won the Champions League in Gelsenkirchen.

The first round of matches - confirmed later - will take place on September 15 and 16.
