Chile elections: Who's who

A former television journalist, Guillier is running as an independent with the backing of the Nueva Mayoria (New Majority) coalition. The left and center-left parties behind Guillier include, Communist Party, MAS Region, Citizen Left, Social Democrat Radical Party, and the Socialist Party. His platform includes gender equality, labor market reforms and improvements to public health.

The billionaire businessman was the Chilean president from 2010 – 2014. He has been dogged by corruption allegations and accused of having conflicts of interest between his political and business aspirations. The right-wing candidate has the support of the Independent Regionalist Party, Independent Democratic Union, National Renewal, Political Evolution, and Amplitude party.

Sanchez is standing as part of the Broad Front coalition, which has come to be seen as an alternative to the progressive, left-wing New Majority. It is made up of left-wing, liberal movements, such as the Humanist Party, the Liberal Party, Democratic Revolution, Poder, Green Ecologist Party, and the Equality Party. She is a journalist and activist and has been polling in third place.

Kast is running on a far-right platform as an independent. His policies include imposing public order and taking a tough stance on delinquency. He has described Chile’s indigenous Mapuche protesters as terrorists. His family held positions in Pinochet’s military regime.

Enriquez-Ominami is the candidate for the Progressive Party and has run for president on two previous occasions. His father led an underground resistance movement against the Pinochet regime and was assassinated. Enriquez-Ominami grew up in exil in France. He has been polling behind the three main coalitions.

Goic is the candidate for the Christian Democrats. After splitting from the New Majority coalition after a fall-out with its progressive wing, the center-right Christian Democratic Party has been struggling to garner support.

The leader of the Chilean Communist Party, the former teacher is an anti-revisionist who describes himself as a Marxist-Leninist. He has expressed his support for North Korea’s ideological stance on several occasions.

Navarro is the founder of the Pais Party, which has a progressive, socialist agenda. He is currently the senator for the Bio-Bio province. His main platform includes opposing the current pension system and bringing in free education. Polls place him well behind the major coalitions.
