Euro Super League?

January 27, 2016

As the Bundesliga announced its turnover had grown for the 11th consecutive year, the DFL's chief executive has welcomed talks about the possibility of a European Super League.

Bundesliga chief Christian Seifert has opened the door for discussions about a possible European Super League, admitting the setup could benefit Germany's top-flight.

"If a Super League is really set up, and it's done in a proper way, it can be something that helps the Bundesliga," the DFL chief executive told reporters.

"Bayern is very popular and Dortmund became very popular — and that shows how powerful the Champions League is ... that lifts them onto a platform where people are watching and they have a lot of fans around the world.

"If a Super League comes in the way you heard it and I heard it that could help our top league because of the brand recognition and brand awareness. As with any other company in the world, UEFA or the ECA has to think about what can be done better in the future."

Despite having announced in 2013 that he didn't support a breakaway competition, the Bayern CEO was open to the suggestion when asked about the proposal in Milan.

"I don't rule that in the future a European league consisting of the big teams from Italy, Germany, England, Spain and France will be founded," he said earlier this month. "This could be either organized under the aegis of UEFA or privately."

Since 2008, Rummenigge has been the chief executive of the European Clubs Association, which consists of representatives from 220 teams across the continent.
