East Side Gallery, Berlin

It is the longest open-air gallery in the world and is one of the best known tourist sights in Berlin: the East Side Gallery, a stretch of the former Berlin Wall which was painted on by some 120 artists.

Over 100 paintings adorn the 1.3-kilometer East Side Gallery. It runs along the River Spree, between the Oberbaum Bridge and Berlin's Ostbahnhof train station. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, artists from around the world flocked to the city to color the drab grey wall with colorful pictures, which also reflected and passed comment on the political developments in 1989 and 1990. One of the most famous of these pictures is the painting "My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love," also referred to as the "Fraternal Kiss" by Dmitri Vrubel, depicting former Soviet ruler Leonid Brezhnev and East German leader Erich Honecker kissing.
