Europe's best cinema: European Film Awards 2016 nominees

Three German co-productions are among the nominees for the 29th European Film Awards. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Wroclaw, Poland on Saturday, December 10.

Wroclaw, Poland, a 2016 European Culture Capital, plays host to the European Film Awards ceremony on Saturday, December 10.

The awards, Europe's answer to the Oscars, recognize films and major players in the film industry for their work in a number of categories, from best film and comedy, to best actor and ac"Best Film" and "Best Comedy" to "Best Actress."

The five nominees for the top prize, the"Best Film"category are:

-     "Elle" by Paul Verhoeven (France/Germany)

-     "I, Daniel Blake" by Ken Loach (Great Britain/France)

-     "Julieta" by Pedro Almodóvar (Spain)

-     "Room" by Lenny Abrahamson (Ireland/Canada)

-     "Toni Erdmann" by Maren Ade (Germany/Austria)
