January 11, 2017

Beneath the waters off the coast of Lanzarote, Europe’s first underwater museum is completed by artist Jason deCaires Taylor. Divers and snorkelers can now visit the seabed exhibits.

Artist Jason deCaires Taylor completes his monumental underwater sculpture work, featuring more than 300 life-size human figures grouped in several seabed arrangements.

Last year the first 35 sculptures from the British artist‘s atelier have been fixed to the seabed in the bay of Las Coloradas. The figures, some twelve to 15 metres below the surface, include life size portraits of locals from the area.

The underwater installations form part of the Atlantic Museum and are designed to help form an artificial reef acting as a breeding site for local species. The figures have been made from environmentally friendly concrete and the project is aimed at raising awareness of oceanic issues.

Jason deCaires Taylor is known for his underwater sculptures and has worked on similar installations at underwater sites off the coast of Mexico and the Caribbean island of Grenada.
