Feliz Navidad! Santa visits Madrid early
Every year, thousands of people dressed as Santa Claus take part in a race to raise money for charity in Madrid. On Sunday, over 7,000 people turned out to run 5 kilometers through the capital's Paseo de la Castellana.
Santas on parade for charity
Crowds of people dressed in Santa Claus' red robes, hat and billowing white beard took part in a run in Madrid to raise money for cancer research and patient care. Last year on December 17, more than 20,000 people reportedly took part in the same race.
Having fun while raising money
One of the race participants waves to spectators. As well as raising money for cancer patients and the nonprofit Fundacion Intheos, some funds are also donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
For the whole family
The race was not limited to young people and adults, but children and infants were on hand. Many were decked out in green robes and elf hats in what is said to be the biggest Santa-themed race in the world.
Out in the cold for a good cause
The race-goers also carried a large inflatable Santa Claus with them on streets. With catchphrase 'sacrificing comfort for a good cause,' last year runners paid 15 euros to enter the race.
Santas on the move
Although the race in Madrid is the most famous, Santa Claus races are held all over the world. Similar charity runs are held in the US, UK, Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the Netherlands, Greece, Finland and France.
