Chancellor Angela Merkel's term in office has seen the end of compulsory military service, the decision to abandon nuclear power and the introduction of equal rights for homosexual partnerships. The conservatives have bid farewell to many of the policies which defined them. Leading conservatives are worried about the effect on traditional conservative voters.
