European Union Foreign Ministers are meeting in Brussels this evening to discuss ways to stabilise the situation in the Middle East. Their counterparts from Egypt, Jordan and Turkey will join them, together with Palestinian representatives, in an effort to safeguard the fragile truce in Gaza. Meanwhile international calls are growing for an independent investigation into whether Israel committed war-crimes during its three-week long military campaign in Gaza. Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has responded by promising his troops that they will be protected from international prosecution.
