Deadly stampede

A bronze plaque was inaugurated on Saturday in the western city of Duisburg near the site where 51 people were killed, and more than 500 injured after mass panic broke out at the Love Parade music festival in July this year
The plaque simply reads: "Duisburg remembers the victims of the Love Parade – July 24, 2010."
Panic broke out among festival-goers as they tried to enter the site through a tunnel, and emergency services struggled to reach those crushed in the crowd.
The victims included people from Italy, China, Australia, Spain, the Netherlands and Bosnia.
Saturday marked the end of the official period of mourning, and now the road and the Karl-Lehr tunnel are due to reopen to the public.
Duisburg residents and mourners have placed candles, photos and mementos in a glass cube, which will remain on site for the coming months.
Investigations following the tragedy have in turn blamed Duisburg city authorities, event organisers and the police for lapses in security and planning for the event.
