Bayern Munich to face Borussia Dortmund in cup last 16

October 29, 2017

The Bundesliga's top two will face each other in the last 16 of the German Cup. With Bayern Munich having knocked out RB Leipzig, the winner of their clash with holders Borussia Dortmund will be overwhelming favorites.

The tie, a repeat of last year's memorable semifinal at the Allianz Arena, was the third out in Sunday's draw and will follow their first league meeting of the campaign next Saturday in Dortmund. The match will be played on either December 19 or 20.

With 18 wins, Bayern are the competition's most successful side, while Dortmund's win over Eintracht Frankfurt in Berlin earlier this year was their fourth German Cup crown. This will be the seventh season in a row that the two have met in the competition.

Elsewhere, beaten finalists Frankfurt will travel to face second-tier outfit Heidenheim, while three-time winners Borussia Mönchengladbach will face fellow Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, who won the cup for the only time in 1993.

The three other top-division clashes are Mainz vs. Stuttgart, Werder Bremen vs. Freiburg and Schalke vs. Cologne. Paderborn, the only remaining third-tier side, will host Ingolstadt, who were relegated to the second division last season. Wolfsburg's away tie at Nürnberg rounds out the last eight.
