Victory on ice
May 12, 2010Hosts Germany beat Denmark 3-1 in their third and final Group D game at the World Ice Hockey Championship.
The German team had to come from behind for the victory, after an early goal from Denmark's Philip Larsen. In front of a sold-out crowd of 18,000 fans at the Cologne Arena, Felix Schuetz and brothers Marcel and Nikolai Goc each scored goals for the home team.
It was the second victory for head coach Uwe Krupp's team, after a 2-1 victory against the USA in last week's opener and a loss to Finland on Monday.
Looking ahead
Germany will now move forward into the qualification round, as one of the top three teams in Group D. After two disappointing losses, the United States, needed to defeat Finland later on Wednesday in order to avoid finishing last in the group and thus dropping into the relegation round.
Team Germany, which came in 15th out of the 16 teams at last year's World Championship in Switzerland, last reached the final eight at the 2003 tournament held in Finland.
