Hurricane Ike hit Cuba on Monday with torrential rain and winds of up to 200 kilometres an hour. Ike has been downgraded to a category one storm but forecasters are warning it could gain strength as it passes over the warm waters of the Caribbean. Satellite images show the storm is about 150 kilometres south of the capital Havana heading in a westerly direction. If Ike continues on its present path it will move towards the oil-producing region of the Gulf of Mexico.
