Competing in the 42nd BMW Berlin Marathon, Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge won the men's marathon with a best unofficial time of 2:04:01.

Kipchoge attempted to beat the world record set by fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto, who completed the 42.195-kilometer (26.219 miles) competition in 2:02:57.

The Berlin marathon offers 40,000 euros ($44,800) for the top spot in the fast-paced competition, with an additional 15,000 euros ($16,800) for making the distance in less than 2:05.

Kipchoge has taken the world of marathon running by storm after winning five out of the six marathons he has competed in, including four in a row.

Kenyan athlete Eliud Kiptanui came in second place at the Berlin marathon with an unofficial 2:05:22, while Ethiopia's Fiyesa Lilesa took third with 2:06:55.

Phillipp Pflieger - one of Germany's best runners - clocked in at 2:12:50.

The Berlin course has produced at least seven world records in the men's category.
