Bayer Leverkusen have signed forward Kevin Volland from Hoffenheim. This comes just 24 hours after they confirmed that they had acquired midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger from Mainz.

Bayer Leverkusen announced on Friday that hey had purchased Volland from Hoffenheim. The 23-year-old forward has signed a five-year deal which will keep him at Leverkusen until 2021.

Neither team has revealed the transfer fee paid, but the mass-circulation daily "Bild" reported that Leverkusen had spent 18 million euros ($20.1 million) to acquire Volland - significantly more than the 14.5 million euros that Leverkusen is thought to have paid for Hakan Calhanoglu in 2014.

"Our interest in Kevin Volland has been there for a while, now finally it has worked out," Leverkusen chairman Michael Schade said in a statement posted on the club's website. "He can play in practically any offensive position."

Volland is the second signing Leverkusen has completed within a period of 24 hours. On Thursday, they acquired former Mainz captain Baumgartlinger, who will dress for the Austrian national team this summer at the European Championship. Baumgartlinger signed a four-year deal with Leverkusen, which will keep him at the club until 2020.

No Euros, no problem

Volland is not part of Germany's preliminary 27-man squad for Euro 2016. German national team coach Joachim Löw elected instead to call up teenagers Julian Brandt and Leroy Sane despite the fact Volland had been in Germany's squad in each of the last four international breaks.

Volland endured a tough season with Hoffenheim, who narrowly avoided relegation. However, he was a big reason they stayed up, scoring four goals and recording eight assists in 2016. During his four seasons in Hoffenheim, Volland scored 36 goals and had 39 assists in 144 appearances.

"I had to take the chance to play for a top club and compete in the Champions League," Volland said. "Bayer is the ideal club for me to develop further and present myself on the European stage."
