Klopp questions African Cup of Nations

The figures are frightening: 9,000 people have been infected with Ebola, 4,500 have already lost their lives as a result. These numbers are also causing concern in the sporting world. On Thursday, Borussia Dortmund's coach Jürgen Klopp questioned the holding of this year's African Cup of Nations as a result of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

"The fact is, I'm really worried about it," said the 47-year-old coach. "If a country believes that it can't stem the spread, then you have to take it seriously. You can't just close your eyes and say, 'we'll go ahead with hosting the African Cup of Nations'."

CAF keen to keep dates

Klopp was referring to host's Morocco attempt to postpone the 2015 tournament as a result of the rampant spread of the disease and the resulting safety issues. The African Football Confederation however, don't seem that open to such an idea. Their first response to the matter was that there would be "no changes to the schedule or the events." The tournament was planned to be held between January 17 and February 8.

Jürgen Klopp did make clear that he had no influence on the matter, but is nevertheless keen to bring more attention to the issue. "When you see which countries have been affected, then sport is not a topic of discussion." Behind Klopp's words lies concern over his African star, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang fires Gabon towards African Cup participation

Klopp has already spoken to the Dortmund striker, who is currently part of the Gabon squad looking to qualify, about the Ebola virus in order to raise his awareness. Two days ago, Aubameyang scored a brace against Burkina Faso to send his country top of their qualifying group. Klopp did say that the club has already drafted an official letter outlining all of the medical issues and that any issues will be documented.
