The Golden Globes nominees were unveiled on Monday by actors Don Cheadle, Laura Dern and Anna Kendrick.

The nostalgic musical comedy "La La Land" leads the pack with seven bids, among which nominations for its lead actors, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, as well best comedy or musical and best director.

Competing with "La La Land" for best comedy are the films "20th Century Women," "Deadpool," "Sing" and "Florence Foster Jenkins."

"Moonlight," a coming-of-age tale of an African-American boy, has landed six nominations. It will face wartime drama "Hacksaw Ridge," heist thriller "Hell or High Water," Australian biopic "Lion," and family drama "Manchester by the Sea" in the category best drama. The latter is also among the top contenders, with five nominations, including for its lead actor, Casey Affleck.

Meryl Streep has obtained her 30th Golden Globe nomination for her role in "Florence Foster Jenkins." She will be receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the ceremony.

In the TV categories, FX's series "The People v, O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" leads with five nominations.

After picking up five accolades at the European Film Awards on Saturday, including best European film, Maren Ade's "Toni Erdmann" is also among the Golden Globe nominees for best foreign picture, along with two French films, Uda Benyamina's "Divines" and Paul Verhoeven's "Elle," the Iranian-French drama "The Salesman" by Asghar Farhadi, as well as "Neruda" by Chilean director Pablo Larraín

The German composer Hans Zimmer has also been nominated for his music on "Hidden Figures;" it's the 13th Golden Globe nomination for the star musician. He has already won two - one in 1995 with "The Lion King" and a second one in 2001 with "Gladiator."

Started in 1944, the Golden Globes honor the best in television and film across more than 25 categories. The winners are chosen by more than 90 journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Globes are considered the most prestigious awards in the US film industry after the Oscars.

The winners of the 74th Golden Globes Awards will be revealed at the ceremony on Sunday, January 8, presented by talk show host Jimmy Fallon.
