My Life – Caroline Link
October 29, 2013Released in 1996, Caroline Link’sdebut movie "Jenseits der Stille" (Beyond Silence) was a commercial and a critical success, and earned her an Oscar nomination. She didn’t win that time, but she did in 2003, for her third film "Nirgendwo in Afrika" (Nowhere in Africa).
Despite her professional success, Caroline Link’s first priority in life is her family. She was born in 1964 in Bad Nauheim, Hessen. The family later moved to Munich. She had a happy childhood. After finishing school, she made her first foray into the world of film as an extra and went on to enroll at the HFF, Munich’s prestigious film school. It was there that she met her husband, director Dominik Graf, and it was as his assistant that she learnt her craft. In fact, their directorial approaches couldn’t be more different. But Graf says he admires the seemingly effortless quality of her work and the intuitive way she goes about writing her scripts. Given her success, critics and audiences have high expectations of any new Link movie.
This portrait follows the award-winning director’s life and career. We also watch Caroline Link at work on a commercial and taking a research trip to Morocco, where her latest film "Exit Marrakech" is set.
