NATO pledges to conduct an investigation into an airstrike by German forces that kills dozens of people in Afghanistan

Constanze TressSeptember 4, 2009

NATO officials in Kabul say they are investigating reports of heavy civilian casualties in an airstrike in northern Aghanistan. The strike was called in by German forces to target two fuel trucks hijacked by militants in the province of Kunduz. NATO says it believes more than 50 militants were killed. But local reports say dozens of civilians also lost their lives when the tankers exploded. The incident comes after revised guidelines aimed at reducing civilian casualties were introduced by the new NATO commander in Aghanistan.
