No ferries in Greece

May 16, 2017

A strike which began on Tuesday has paralyzed ferry traffic in Greece. There is a possibility that anyone vacationing on some of the smaller Greek islands may be stuck there.

Greek ferry workers are protesting at further austerity proposals and are staging a two day strike. This has led to massive cancellations of scheduled ferries, and on Tuesday and Wednesday smaller islands without airports will remain cut off from the rest of the world.

The PNO union reports that the striking ferry workers are protesting against planned pension cuts and the widespread black market labor in their sector.

Greek journalists also staged a one day strike on Tuesday. There were no news shows on radio or TV. Public transport and the public sector also expect to see strikes in coming days.
