Others to complete the list presented on Thursday were "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Her," "Nebraska," "Philomena," and "The Wolf of Wall Street." It was star-studded crime caper "American Hustle" and a space thriller "Gravity" that led the way, however, claiming 10 nominations apiece. "12 Years a Slave", an epic historical drama, was awarded nine.

Up for best actor are Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Wolf of Wall Street"), Christian Bale ("American Hustle"), Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave"), Bruce Dern ("Nebraska") and Matthew McConaughey ("Dallas Buyers Club"), the latter of which won the Golden Globe for best actor on Sunday. Bale is the only one of the five to have previously won an Oscar, with veterans Tom Hanks ("Captain Phillips") and Robert Redford ("All Is Lost") missing nominations.

The best actress nominees are three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep ("August: Osage County"), as well as fellow former winners Cate Blanchett ("Blue Jasmine"), Sandra Bullock ("Gravity"), Judi Dench ("Philomena") and now five-times nominated Amy Adams ("American Hustle").

Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese has the chance to add to his one Oscar win after a best director nomination for "The Wolf of Wall Street," but must fend off fellow nominees David O. Russell ("American Hustle"), Alfonso Cuaron ("Gravity"), Alexander Payne ("Nebraska") and Steve McQueen ("12 Years A Slave").

Among the best supporting actors in line for an Oscar are German-Irishman Michael Fassbender ("12 Years a Slave"), Bradley Cooper ("American Hustle") and Somali-American Barkhad Abdi, who made his film debut in "Captain Phillips". Previous Oscar winners Julia Roberts ("August: Osage County") and Jennifer Lawrence ("American Hustle"), meanwhile, could add to their trophy cabinet with a win in the best supporting actress category.

The awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles and will be hosted by comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres for the second-straight year.
