For nearly 40 years Panamanian-based law firm Mossack Fonseca specialized in creating shell corporations headquartered in such places as the British Virgin Islands. Their owners could use anonymous accounts and other means to conceal yachts, artworks and real estate purchases. The leaked documents originated with Mossack Fonseca and investigative journalists from around the world have been researching the papers, which include Emails, deeds, bank account statements, passport copies, and other pertinent information detailing ownership of 215,000 shell companies. Among the owners are 12 current and former world leaders and 128 leading politicians, as well as a number of top global financial institutions, including 15 German banks or their affiliates.
