South Africa – producing citrus juice with biomass

South Africa is considered the continent’s most important economic center, with huge potential for mining and other industries. But when it comes to development, the country is taking a more measured step forward and trying to honor its climate responsibilities, too. The South African government has set an ambitious goal to slash the country’s CO2 emissions levels by one third by the year 2020. A citrus fruit factory in the north of the country is a shining example of how that transition can work. The plant has shifted from energy-intensive coal to a carbon-neutral solution - sawdust that has been gathered from neighboring lumber mills.
