Chile sends Spain packing, valiant Australia are defeated by the high-flying Netherlands, and Croatia thump Cameroon - all the highlights from World Cup Day 7 in pictures.
Defending champs are out
The worries that crept up around the Spanish team after their 5-1 loss to the Netherlands turned into nightmares against Chile. The Chileans went up 2-0 in the first half and never looked back, ending Spain's World Cup before the conclusion of the group stage.
Changing things up
Vicente del Bosque dropped Gerard Pique and the iconic Xavi for the match against Chile. Despite the changes, Spain couldn't find their form and were beaten by a motivated and tactically strong Chilean side.
A tournament to forget for Casillas
Spanish fans at the Maracana whistled their disapproval of Spain's keeper, Iker Casillas, from his first touch of the ball. The 5-1 loss to the Netherlands wouldn't have been as drastic had it not been for a few mistakes by the keeper, and one poor save led to Chile's decisive second goal just before halftime.
Chile on fire
Spain's defense was certainly poor, but Chile's high-octane attack was equally excellent. Driving forces Charles Vasquez and Arturo Vidal were the perfect creative engines ahead of Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sanchez.
What happens now?
What's next for Spain's aging golden generation? A change of house is certainly in order. The Spanish team's elimination makes them the third consecutive reigning World Cup champion from Europe to be elminated in the following tournament's group stage.
Royal audience
Before Spain kicked off against Chile, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima were at the Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre for the Netherlands' match with Australia. The Netherlands stunning 5-1 dismantling of Spain in their opening World Cup match drummed up high hopes of another blowout against a young Australia side.
Dutch take the lead
Twenty minutes into the match, the Netherlands took the lead through Arjen Robben. The Bayern Munich winger raced down the left channel and put a clinical finish past Mat Ryan.
Socceroos shoot back
Less than a minute after going down, Australia responded through, who else, Tim Cahill. The Socceroos all-time leading scorer added to his tally with a brilliant volley from the left side of the area - surely the goal of the World Cup thus far.
Penalty surprise
Seven minutes after the restart, Australia were surprisingly awarded a penalty after Dutch defender Daryl Janmaat handled the ball in the box. Captain Mile Jedinak burried the spot kick to make it 2-1.
Rapid response
But once again, one goal was quickly followed by another. This time it was the Netherlands captain Robin Van Persie. The striker took advantage of weak penalty area defending to fire off a shot into the top of the net from close range. 2-2 and advantage to the Dutch.
Netherlands seal win
Despite two Australia goals, the Dutch were in firm control for most of the match. Their inevitable winner came in the 69th minute, when substitute Memphis Depay fired a curling shot from long range. It finished 3-2, surely ending an honorable World Cup campaign for the Socceroos, and keeping the Netherlands in fine form.
Croatia thump Cameroon
The World Cup's unlucky side from opening day played Cameroon in Wednesday's final match. Three Bundesliga players got on the scoreboard as the Croatians ran out 4-0 winners over Volke Finke's African side. Ivica Olic opened the scoring off an assist from Wolfsburg teammate Ivan Perisic in the 11th minute.
From provider to scorer
Five minutes from halftime Cameroon were reduced to 10 men after Alex Song elbowed Mario Mandzukic in the back. Things got worse shortly after the restart when Perisic capitalized on a turnover. He raced down the left wing and sent low shot from a tough angle past Charles Itandje to make it 2-0 for Croatia.
Two for Mario
Mario Mandzukic, who missed Croatia's first match after serving a suspension, scored twice in the second half to finish off Cameroon. As ever, the Bayern Munich striker found himself in the right place at the right time.
Facing Mexico
The victory gives Croatia three points in Group A, one behind Brazil. It sets up a must-win final match against Mexico, who are also on four points. Mandzukic and company will need to be at their best to reach the knockout stage.
