Bremen battle for point

After a two-week international break, Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen played out an absorbing 3-3 draw at the BayArena. Sebastian Prödl leveled in the last few minutes to seal Werder's third draw in consecutive matches.

While Leverkusen struggled to match the same intensity early in the match, as shown in previous outings, they were well in control. In the 11th minute, the impressive Gonzalo Castro smashed the woodwork from 20 yards, as the hosts ramped up the pressure.

Another counter-attack and overload in attack, six minutes later, saw 18-year-old Tin Jedvaj afforded acres of space on the right-side of the box and he leathered the ball off the underside of the crossbar and past Raphael Wolf. It was Leverkusen's 2000th Bundesliga goal.

Roger Schmidt's side waited until just before the half hour mark before clicking into place and were denied a crucial second goal on several occasions by the alunumium.

In the 27th minute, Stefan Kießling rose highest at the back-post, a familiar set-piece target for Leverkusen, to head back across goal where Emir Spahic stuck out an ambitious leg that diverted the ball on to the bar.

Nine minutes later, Germany U-19 European Championship winner Levin Özuntali spun and smashed the ball on the half-volley on to the crossbar.

Yet despite chance-after-chance for Leverkusen, they opened the back-door for Bremen to level on the half-time mark. Midfielder Fins Bartels overlapping into space on the right, before tucking the ball past Bernd Leno.

Within a minute of the hour point, Bremen threw a sucker punch. Franco di Santo managed to beat the offside trap, composing himself, before slotting through Leno's legs.

It took something special for Leverkusen to muscle their way back into the match. Hakan Calhanoglu curled home a beautiful 25-yard free-kick past the outstretched Wolf on 62 minutes.

From then, and 10 minutes later, Leverkusen were back in-front through substitute Son Heung-Min. The Korean forward spinning creatively away from his defender and then lashing a left-foot shot past the Werder Bremen keeper.

But Bremen's trait under Robin Dutt of scrapping points continued, as Sebastian Prödl creeped in from deep to send the away supporters and his coach into raptures with the equalizing goal, four minutes from time.
