The flower island of Mainau opens a new season

French lavender and Bulgarian roses will take visitors on a European journey on the island of Mainau in Lake Constance this year. The season has kicked off to a traditional start with the orchid show in the palm house.

This year's show is dedicated to the so-called butterfly orchid. Visitors can see wild forms of the species. Garden director Markus Zeiler announced this year's floral tour through Europe featuring typical plants and flowers from different parts of the continent.

A Dutch market will be held to celebrate the tulip season in May. A field of lavender will transport visitors to France's Provence region and, as every year, June will see more than 1,000 different kinds of roses in full bloom. The Bulgarian rose, for example, which is traditionally used to make a beautiful fragrant essential oil.
