The Serbian province of Kosovo is now on the eve of a declaration of independence - expected to be made tomorrow, Sunday. If and when the declaration comes, the new country is expected to be recognised by most European Union states and the US. But both Russia and Serbia itself say any shift towards independence will be "null and void" under international law. A short while ago the EU approved the launch of a 2,000-strong police and justuce mission to help the transition process in Kosovo.
