Lotte send Bremen crashing out of the German Cup

Sportfreunde Lotte of the third division beat a 10-man Werder Bremen side on Sunday to advance to the second round of Germany's domestic cup competition.

Matthias Rahn gave Lotte an early 1-0 lead, but Bremen drew level through a Zlatko Junuzovic header just before the break. Andre Dej got the winner for Lotte shortly after the restart. Bremen finished the match with 10 men after Fin Bartels was handed a straight red card in the 82nd minute. This was the fourth time that Bremen have been knocked out of the cup by a lower-tier side in the past six seasons.

"We knew what to expect and that it would not be easy here," Bremen coach Viktor Skripnik said afterwards. "Of course we are disappointed that we didn't do what we came here to do. We wanted to play with a lot of patience in the second half, but it didn't work."

Unterhaching 3-3 Mainz (Mainz go through 4-2 on penalties)

Bundesliga side Mainz had their new Danish goalkeeper, Jonas Lössl, to thank for preventing them from suffering a similar fate as Bremen after they conceded to late goals in regulation time. Lössl stopped Dominik Stahl's shot in the penalty shootout and Stephan Hain fired the ball over the crossbar to give Mainz the win over fourth-tier Unterhaching. Mainz finished the match down to 10 men after Guilio Donati was handed a second yellow card in the 114th minute after committing a series of fouls.

Magdeburg 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt ( Frankfurt go through 4-3 on penalties

Eintracht Frankfurt were also forced into a penalty shootout after being held to a 1-1 draw through extra time by third-division side Magdeburg. For Frankfurt too, the goalkeeper was the hero, with Lukas Hradecky stopping three of the penalties. The Bundesliga team had started the match brightly, going up 1-0 on Branimir Hrgota's goal after just seven minutes, only to concede Nico Hammann's equalizer four minutes from time. Michael Hector, on loan to Frankfurt from Chelsea, was sent off for a second bookable offense in the first half of extra time.

Bremer SV 0-7 Darmstadt

Darmstadt, who are about to embark on their second Bundesliga campaign since gaining promotion in 2015, had no trouble with fifth-tier side Bremer SV, sailing to a 7-0 win. The only bad news for coach Norbert Meier's side was the fact that his captain, Aytac Sulu was forced to leave the match due to an injury just after the half-hour mark.

Egersdorf/Langreder 0-7 Hoffenheim

Andrej Kramaric scored a hat trick as Hoffenheim also wiped out fourth tier Egestorf/Langreder. Coach Julian Nagelsmann's men can expect a much sterner test when they face RB Leipzig in their opening match of the Bundesliga season next weekend.

Hauenstein 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen

Leverkusen had a tough time of it against fifth-class side Hauenstein but did get there in the end, thanks to their Mexican star Chicharito, who opened the scoring before assisting on Karim Bellarabi's winner.

Aue 0-0 Ingolstadt (Ingolstadt go through 8-7 on penalties)

In a game that saw few scoring chances and even fewer goals, Aue of the 2. Bundesliga pushed Ingolstadt through extra time into a penalty shootout, which also went into overtime. Fifteen of the 16 shots in the shootout were converted, with Nicky Adler's miss deciding it in Ingolstadt's favor.

Regensburg 1-1 Hertha Berlin (Hertha go through 5-3 on penalties)

At least the fans Regensburg got to see a couple of goals during regulation time. Alexander Nandzi put the 3. Liga leaders ahead shortly after the break, but Mitchell Weiser spared Hertha an embarrassment by pulling the Bundesliga side level seven minutes from time. Marcel Hofrath's miss in the penalty shootout ended Regensburg's aspirations of advancing to the second round.
