Werder Bremen captain Clemens Fritz has announced that he will retire at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old veteran of the Bundesliga has made over 250 appearances for the Weserstadion side and has 22 caps for the German national team.

The midfielder has been a constant member of Viktor Skripnik's side this season and says he would rather leave on a high with the Bremen fans.

In an open letter on the club's website he said: "After careful consideration, I have come to the decision that I mean to finish my sporting career after this season.

"The decision was not taken lightly but it is, for me, irrefutable."

The club captain confirmed that he had no interest in renewing his contract or moving abroad for one last deal.

He added: "I have now played for Werder Bremen for 10 years and I've witnessed all the ups and downs in recent years.

"I've not only grown fond of the association (with the club). It has become an essential part of my life."

Fritz's final task before hanging up his boots will be to help Bremen avoid relegation. The club current sit 16th in the Bundesliga table and travel to Schalke to kick off the second half of the season next Sunday.
