In Togo many believe that mental illness is caused by evil spirits or spells. There are hardly any psychiatric institutions and only a handful of trained psychologists. For many, Christian prayer camps are the last hope. Prayer is supposed to cure all illnesses, but the sick are often beaten and chained for weeks or months. And there are few alternatives for patients with mental health problems.
