Germany’s Highest Peak

You can ski on nine easy to moderately difficult downhill pistes on the Zugspitzplatt, a plateau to the south of the summit. The view of the Wetterstein Mountains, which surround the Zugspitze glacier, is impressive. You can count on snow here from November to May, even if it's slushy elsewhere. Many skiers stop off at Sonn Alpin, the rustic Bavarian restaurant on the glacier, to enjoy a traditional Bavarian treat, like sweet yeast dumplings with vanilla sauce.

The 2962 meter summit of the Zugspitze was first conquered in 1820. Nowadays about half a million visitors come to the mountain every year. In the winter season, there's also a very special place to spend the night: an igloo village, built using oversized balloons and snow.
